Types of Fabrics

Screen and Sheer Fabrics

Screen and Sheer Fabrics are fabrics that allow a degree of light and heat to enter a building. Screen fabrics generally refer to fabrics used with blinds and awnings and sheers are those fabrics used with curtains. The advantage of these fabrics is that they give daytime privacy and heat protection without compromising the view to the outside. Screen and sheer fabrics are available in varying degrees of openness which can be chosen to correspond with light, heat and privacy requirements. Sheer curtain fabrics give a sensual soft feel to a space, achieving a free form floating appearance. Screen and sheer fabrics will only achieve partial privacy during the night. If complete privacy is desired during these times a translucent or block-out fabric may be more appropriate or a combination of fabrics and furnishings.

Translucent Fabrics

Translucent Fabrics permit some light and heat to enter a building while providing full privacy. These fabrics are ideal for sensitive areas such as bathrooms, meeting rooms or any other room where full privacy is required but light is desired. These fabrics are available in varying amounts of translucency boarding at both ends of the spectrum between a screen/sheer or block-out fabric.

Blockout Fabrics

Blockout Fabrics prevent the most heat and light from entering a building or space. They give complete privacy and are very effective in reducing heat gain. These fabrics are often used in rooms where the majority of outside light is desired to be blocked out such as bedrooms, theatres and officers especially where visual monitors or screens are to be viewed, or when used on awnings to blockout 100% of the suns harsh UV rays. Blockout fabrics with the combination of linings have an added advantage of dampening sound and increasing audio fidelity. Unlike screen and sheer fabrics, blockout fabrics promote a strong solid appearance to a space. A combination of both blockout and screen/sheer furnishings can be used to achieve light and openness during the day while complete privacy and darkness during at night.
